Research Groups are fundamental units of research organized around common lines of activity and coordinated by a head researcher. The UAH has twenty multidisciplinary environmental research groups composed of expert researchers from a range of different areas of knowledge.
Created to increase awareness, respect and the protection of the environment, the Environment Chair of the University of Alcalá develops projects and provides technical assistance in a number of environment-related fields to the levels of scientific and technical quality that are to be expected of a highly qualified centre.

The Juan Carlos I Royal Botanical Garden is a project for researching into, conserving, and transmitting knowledge about plant-life and the environment. Founded by the university in 1991, it occupies 26 acres of land on its campus site. The Garden houses interesting scientific and ornamental plant collections, tries out new cultivation methods, and collaborates with UAH teaching and research staff. It is also a unique experimental and educational resource for university students and teachers, as well as for other scholars and the public at large. .

The UAH is home to the Madrid Institute of Advanced Studies, IMDEA Water, an initiative of the Madrid Regional Government that performs excellent research work regarding water use. A good number of our own teaching staff work at the Institute alongside other scientists, all under the leadership of a UAH full professor and facing up to the challenge of responsible water management in the 21st century.
